Bin Laden, Taliban; American made

What is most important to the history of the world? The Taliban or the collapse of the Soviet empire? Some stirred-up Moslems or the liberation of Central Europe and the end of the cold war? — Zbigniew Brzezinski.

Above: Former national security advisor to President Jimmy Carter and former foreign policy advisor to Senator Barrack Obama, Zbigniew Brzezinski, visits the Mujahideen in Pakistan.

In the late 70s, President Jimmy Carter began a covert CIA operation in Afghanistan known as “Operation Cyclone.” The goal of the mission was to train and arm ragtag “freedom fighters” in the hills of Afghanistan to fight against occupying Soviet forces. At the time, the fighters were known as the Mujahideen — we now know them as Osama bin Laden, the Taliban and Al Qaeda.

Like the CIA’s overthrow of the democratically elected Iranian government in 1953, “Operation Cyclone” resulted in serious blowback and further fueled the rise of radical Islam. Ironically, President George W. Bush spent more than seven years fighting the terrorists Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan helped create.

FBI doesn’t link Osama bin Laden to 9/11

In foreign policy, war and peace on November 10, 2009 at 4:19 am

So, here’s a real head scratcher.

I just checked out the FBI’s “Most Wanted Terrorists” on its Web site and could scarce believe my eyes. I heard rumors that the FBI hasn’t convicted bin Laden of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks but thought surely the media would have picked up on the story.

It turns out the rumors are true.

Osama bin Laden is on the FBI’s “Most Wanted Terrorists” list but not for the reasons one would expect. Bin Laden is cited for the following: murder of U.S. national outside the United States; conspiracy to murder U.S. nationals outside the united states; attack on a federal facility resulting in death.

Nowhere is Bin Laden charged with committing crimes within the United States.

Below his picture, the FBI explains the charges in more detail:

“Usama Bin Laden is wanted in connection with the August 7, 1998, bombings of the United States Embassies in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and Nairobi, Kenya. These attacks killed over 200 people. In addition, Bin Laden is a suspect in other terrorist attacks throughout the world.”

Wait — I thought we went to Afghanistan to get Osama bin Laden, the man responsible for killing thousands of Americans on Sept. 11, 2001. Turns out our government is less sure bin Laden is “our man” than the thousands of troops they convinced to fight in two wars.

Something else: The FBI lists Osama bin Laden as being left handed. In the November 2001 bin Laden confession video the man said to be bin Laden repeatedly picks up a glass of water, scratches his head, and gestures almost exclusively with his right hand. Strange.
